Learn about magician jobs
You may want to start a career as a professional magician. It can be a fun and glamorous way to earn a living, if you know some good magic tricks. There are a few different places you can go to begin your journey as a magician. Whether you learn from a family member, a magic shop or from a book, a novice magician can quickly get into the game and begin performing for other people.
How to learn?
The easiest way to learn is to find a family member or friend who already is a magician and is willing to teach you some of their tricks. Even if you do not know anyone who can teach you, there are probably stores in your town that sell magician supplies. Many of these shops will have books and kits where you can learn various magic tricks.
The local library will also have an assortment of magic books where you can learn the trade. Most magic tricks can be performed with items you already have around the house, such as scarves or a deck of cards. For tricks that require small props, toy stores are a good place to look if you don’t have a magician supply store in your area.
What kind of magician will you be?
Once you have learned a good selection of magic tricks, it is time to decide what type of magician you will be as a professional. Street magicians and comedy magicians are the most common these days. Even if you are not strictly a comedy magician, it’s a good idea to unleash your inner comedian to liven up your routine. This is especially important for beginner magicians who tend to be nervous and somewhat robotic during their routines, unless they want to be a mime magician!
To determine if you are ready to perform in front of an audience, ask yourself the following questions:
- Do your magic tricks go as intended? If not, are you able to recover without panicking?
- Are you able to switch up your style based on the audience?
- Can you sustain an entire half-hour performance?
- If you are required to play a second show for the same audience, do you have enough material to give them a different performance?
If you have answered yes to these questions, you are probably ready to test out the local stage. The best place to start is at a small bar or club since most of these places will have one night a week that is a free-access, open-mic session. Start out small and refine your magic tricks until you have them down perfectly. You want to start off with a good reputation when you begin working as a professional magician.
