Modeling Portfolios
Make a great modeling portfolio
A professional quality modeling portfolio is a must for all aspiring models. Your portfolio is your resume and is often the only chance you have to make a good impression on a prospective employer. You do not want to give the appearance that you do not care enough about your career to invest in a professionally made book. Here are some modeling portfolio tips to help improve your chances of landing a job.
What should go into a portfolio?
An ideal modeling portfolio contains between 15 and 25 of your best-looking photographs. Be sure to select an assortment of different styles and looks when setting up your portfolio. You want them all to be among your best, but variety is important to show that you are flexible and can pull off whatever look the designer may have in mind. Include shots taken indoors and outdoors, along with as many different lighting conditions as you can find. Again, you want to showcase your versatility and that you are a good fit for photo shoots in any environment.
If you do not have enough photos to fill out the entire portfolio, it is better to select fewer high-quality shots than to fill it up with poor-quality shots. Remember, you are trying to showcase your absolute best with your modeling portfolio. You do not want to give anyone a reason to question whether you are a good fit for their job.
Headshots
Headshots are a key part of a good modeling portfolio, along with body shots if you intend to model for clothing manufacturers. Body shots can be taken with a swimsuit or other tight-fitting garment, so you can remain modest while showing off your curves. Many larger modeling agencies will require body and headshots before even considering you as an applicant. Some companies now even prefer that you upload an online modeling portfolio as it makes it easier for them to review applicants in a central location; giving the agencies what they want will lead to more modeling auditions.
If possible, hire a professional photographer who specializes in creating modeling portfolios. This may cost a little bit extra, but you will be able to ask for advice on which photos to include, along with any suggested poses or outfits. They will often be familiar with what the various modeling agencies are looking for and can help you give them exactly what they want. The money may also be worth it if you plan to diversify into other areas of the arts. Once you have a professionally created modeling portfolio, you could send it to casting directors to get acting or singing auditions as well.
