Music Video Jobs

There are many different roles that you can go into related to producing music videos, including story designer, recording specialist, camera operator or director. Each requires very different skill sets and all can be very challenging and rewarding.

As a story designer for music videos, you will be taking a piece of music and developing the way a video is shot to complement the lyrics. Performing artists often have an idea of what they want their music videos to show, so you may be expanding upon an existing idea, or even creating a video idea from scratch. As a story designer, you will likely work on a team who will give input on how various elements should be arranged in order to best suit the video to the music. Your story design must be completed before music video production begins, but must also be flexible to accommodate potential changes during production.

As a recording specialist, your job will be just as your name suggests. You may be responsible for either video or audio recording, so you need to have the ability to work rapidly in a fast-paced environment and perform the duties necessary to capture the video or its music. You need patience for this role, as you may need to record several takes for each scene to get enough footage.

Directors can be the backbone of a music video production company. Directors keep everyone involved in a music video production in line and doing what they are supposed to do at any given time. If you aspire to lead and manage, a career as a music video director may be the perfect choice for you.
